The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1983. The band's lineup currently consists of vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist John Frusciante. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, they are one of the best-selling bands of all time. The band was initially formed by Kiedis, Flea, guitarist Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons, all schoolmates at Fairfax High School. They initially performed under the name Tony Flow and the Majestic Masters of Mayhem. Their early sound was a unique blend of funk, punk rock, and psychedelic elements, often characterized by Kiedis's rapid-fire vocals and Flea's slap-bass technique. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1984, but it wasn't until their third album, 'The Uplift Mofo Party Plan' (1987), that they began to achieve mainstream recognition. Tragically, guitarist Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988, which led to Irons' departure from the band. John Frusciante and Chad Smith joined the band shortly thereafter, forming a lineup that would propel the band to even greater heights. The album 'Mother's Milk' (1989) marked a turning point, featuring the hit single 'Knock Me Down.' 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' (1991) became a commercial breakthrough, driven by the singles 'Give It Away' and 'Under the Bridge,' which showcased the band's melodic and introspective side. Frusciante departed the band in 1992 due to the pressures of fame and drug addiction. The band continued with various guitarists, including Dave Navarro, before Frusciante rejoined in 1998. With Frusciante back in the fold, the band released 'Californication' (1999), a critical and commercial success that reaffirmed their status as one of the biggest bands in the world. 'By the Way' (2002) and 'Stadium Arcadium' (2006) followed, further solidifying their sound and expanding their fanbase. Frusciante left the band again in 2009, replaced by Josh Klinghoffer. With Klinghoffer, the band released 'I'm with You' (2011) and 'The Getaway' (2016). In 2019, Frusciante rejoined the band for the third time. This led to the release of 'Unlimited Love' (2022) and 'Return of the Dream Canteen' (2022), both produced by Rick Rubin. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are known for their energetic live performances and their willingness to experiment with different musical styles. They have had a lasting impact on popular music, influencing countless artists across various genres. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
